Down at the Harbor

This past Sunday Chieko and I had to wake up at 7:30 to join our equally groggy neighbors in cleaning up the local 'park.' They advertised it as a park in the flier we got announcing our civic duties, when in reality it was a couple of strips of grass around the neighborhood garbage station. If their intent is to get us all to have some sense of solidarity as neighbors they succeeded as far as nobody really wanting to be there. And I know that one person with a weed-whacker would have done an equal if not better job of tidying things up. The whole operation kind of fizzled out about 30 minutes into it when the chief of our neighborhood decided that things looked good enough, and it was time to review how to use the fire hoses at the end of each road. That was a little more entertaining, though going by how long it took them to actually get water flowing out the end of the hose, I pray there are no fires.

So there we found ourselves, awake at an unnatural hour for a Sunday morning, and decided to take a drive down to the beach. Actually I decided to take a drive down to the beach and prodded my wife into going with me. We went to a different place than usual and there really wasn't much going on, but along the way we passed a little harbor that caught my eye. When we passed it again on our way home we got out and roamed around for a while. It proved to be quite a photogenic place.

A few notes:

• I think most of these boats catch squid/octopus, and the lanterns are used to attract them to the surface
• there are a lot of details in these pics so don't be afraid to blow them up and explore
• I've wanted to get a picture of a bird and a plane in the same frame for a long time
• something about the crane perched at the head of the beach grabbed my attention
